Respect: A Player’s Message to Parents.

Calling all Langho FC parents I found this on a grass roots football web site, some sound advice for all I think.

Thanks for coming to support me today.

As my friends and l play, l want you to remember a few things:

  • I am here to have fun, please encourage me and all the other players no matter which team we play for.
  • You are representing me; please do not embarrass me by being negative, shouting or swearing.
  • Please do not stand too close to the pitch, this can distract me from my game and I can’t concentrate properly.
  • Please do not question the referee’s decision; our coaches will give us help if we need it.
  • Do not coach me from the side, my coach is here to teach me and too many instructions will confuse me.
  • I think doing my best and learning to play is more important than winning. Do not ask me the score; ask me if I had fun.
  • Praise me for good skills, sportsmanship, discipline and effort. These are the things that make me a real winner.
  • Do not criticise my mistakes as I will be scared to try things again. Mistakes will make me better as I can learn from them.
  • Please do challenge any spectators that behave in the wrong way. Tell them that we don’t allow negative behaviour.
  • We have a responsibility to look after our pitch, please do not drop litter including this leaflet. Take it home or put it in a bin.

I hope to make you proud of me.

Please make me proud of you too.

U14’s Barrowford 0 – 1 Langho

Swinden playing fields in Barrowford was the location of this Under 14 encounter. Located by the canal, and flanked by the brand new floodlit Steven Burke cycling track, the adjoining footpath allows dog walkers the opportunity to take their  pets for a gentle stroll. Twice our match was interrupted by dogs running out of control around a children’s football match. One day someone will be bitten by a dog at a football match, or a child scared by dogs will suffer some form of trauma. Sports fields are no place for dogs and dog owners should be respectful of that fact when exercising their dogs.

It was back to league action today for the Under 14’s. Three changes to today’s squad gave Harrison the chance to play his first game of the season, and Ben Hope to take over for the day in goal. Barrowford Celtic were new to Langho, having played in the league above last season, and posed a different threat. This game was a scrappy affair particularly in the first half, where the Langho boys looked very disjointed, and a little sleepy at times. The shape, passing and movement that was spoken about wasn’t in evidence in the first half, as we forgot to put into practice what had been worked on both individually and as a team. Chances were created and not taken, defenders stood back and gave the opposition too much time on the ball. Nil – Nil at half time, and in all fairness to the boys, they knew, like us, they could play better.

The game was settled in the second half with a fabulous right foot strike by Max Livesey, and after the goal, a little more determination and belief returned, and with a little more composure those chances that were missed could and should have been taken.  Barrowford continued to press for an equaliser right up to the final whistle, but Jack and Elliott Bates marshalled the defence superbly, and Ben Hope showed some good handling in the goals.

Today we were a little rushed in our play, too often sat off the opposition,  and generally played too narrow. Training moves to the astro turf at Pleckgate on Tuesday night, and whilst there is plenty to work on and improve, another clean sheet and hard fought victory is very pleasing to note. Matt Neilson took the man of the match award for his holding play in midfield, closely run by the defence who grew stronger and more determined as the game progressed. Well done to the Under 14’s.
