Cap’n Jasper steers Langho to victory!
Jasper Griffin put in a great captain’s performance as he inspired Langho to a six – three victory over a much improved Blue Star team.
The start of the game almost knocked the wind out of the home side’s sails as Blue Star’s MOM, James Joseph, saw his speculative twenty yard plus effort fly into the back of the net after just thirty seconds. To make matters worse the away team were two to the good just moments later. Thankfully the team coped with the pressure much better then their manager and while I was a gibbering wreck on the sidelines, Jasper collected the ball and neatly wove an intricate path around the Blue Star defence before halving the deficit with a great shot. Cal seemed unimpressed by Jasper’s antics and almost as if to prove a point, won the ball straight from the kick off and performed his own mazey run to coolly finish and draw Langho level.
Blue Star were still playing good football and regained the lead with a fifteen yard effort straight from Langho’s goal kick, their MOM now completing his hat-trick. Langho knew they had more goals in them though and another goal apiece from Jasper and Cal gave them the edge by the odd goal in seven at the interval. Half-time saw Jasper move from attack to a more defensive midfield position. Jasper revelled in his new role and the odd opponent who managed to evade his tough tackling was well dealt with by Leo at the back. The boys piled plenty of pressure on the ball with Cal, Sharky and Josh marking tightly for Blue Star’s goal kicks making it difficult for them to escape out of their own half. Cal scored his eighth of the two games against Blue Star and Sharky also netted to round off what was a very solid second half display.
A big thank you to Josh and Ryan for sharing the goal-keeping duties. Josh’s kicks are getting better each week and Ryan didn’t put a foot (glove?) wrong in the second half – bravely taking one for the team as a ball was smacked into his face!
