Good Heavens

Back to the Presidents Cup, and Langho finally had the luxury of a home game – the first in six. Stephen Caton had been casted for the fourth series of the hit TV series Benidorm, so Phil Sharples made his first appearance of the season. Dominic Lester and Lee Hennigan were still out, so new signing Fred Celestial joined the returning Clark Walsh and Mark Davis on the bench.

The pitch had been rolled, cut and drained midweek, and was dryer than a nuns gusset, as was our performance… Continue reading Senior 1sts: Langho 3 – 0 Goodshaw United

Payback

Langho were on road once again, just seven days after their title challenge was blown out the water after an unholy weekend in Rimington. Worsthorne were the opponents this time, who have recently found their form again after recouping some of the key players which left the club earlier in the season to pastures new. The grass was obviously no greener which surprises me, as the moon normally has more grass than Bank Hall…..

As amazing as it may sound, we had to drive through Goa to get there – we could only hope that the quality of game would surpass the quality of the canal which ran adjacent to the ground!

After a promising pre-season statement from the Worsthorne camp, and the surface was indeed free from that naturally occurring granular material more commonly known as sand. Clearly, and as promised, some money had been spent. Possibly the best condition I have seen the pitch in since 2004, the pitch had also been verti-drained, which made it look like there had been a serial pogo attack the previous night….. Insert Coin

If there was a season-defining game for either team on show last Saturday, this was it. Should Rimington loose their increasingly impressive home record there would certainly be questions raised from some sectors of the Soccer Weekend kingdom. Should Rimington manage to defeat the visitors, Langhos title challenge would be well and truly ****ed, for another season at least.

After spending Friday night and Saturday morning in apprehension, the game surprisingly went ahead. The customary midweek downpour that had seen games at both Mill Hill and Enfield postponed, had only inspired the Rimington ground staff. The playing surface was surprisingly excellent for the first half at least), thanks to a good pre-match roll from captain Olly McClean.

Johnny Welch came in for Lee Hennigan (thigh) and Dominic Lester replaced Jack Hayes, who joined Atif Mungal and the returning Phil Sharples on the bench. We were looking pretty strong, and even Ian Simpson turned up half an hour before kick off…. Continue reading Senior 1sts: Rimington 2 – 1 Langho

Senior 1sts: Borrowdale United 1 – 9 Langho

Borrowdale United vs Langho live from Townley Park – not the most tantalising of ties for the neutral!

Langho travelled weak again with Dominic Lester, Johnny Welch and Clarke Walsh pulling out midweek with injuries. Neil Robinson made his first league start since his controversial signing in the January transfer window, while Adam Welch and Tommy Sharples made a welcomed return to the first eleven after being rotated against BGSOB the previous Saturday. Johnny Welch was to be the visitors only substitute after passing a late fitness test thanks to an early-morning session with the Royal Mail. Senior 1sts: Burnley Grammar School Old Boys 1 – 2 Langho

Nelly The Robinson Comes to Town.

After a disappointing result against resilient Read United, Langho turned their attentions to the Presidents Cup against a promising division two side who were averaging over four goals per game.

The fixture had been moved from the hosts usual gaff, to the home of Padiham, where pitches are represented by turds. Dominic Lester made his first start after missing the past six games, and squad rotation meant that Neil Robinson and Clarke Walsh were handed their full debuts. Johnny Welch could only be named as a substitute after suffering an injury mid-week at the Soccer Dome, and Tommy Sharples dropped to the bench with disgust. Ooops!

Saturday was a tale of good versus evil, right versus wrong, ginger hair versus hair spray, navy blue with red versus red with navy blue, BB6 versus BB12……… and, the unlucky versus the lucky. As the latin proverb goes, fortune favours the brave!

Who could forget the hobbit-style changing rooms, not even enough room to swing a rodent, one fart and we were all history….. Continue reading Senior 1sts: Read United 2 – 2 Langho

The Meltdown.

Langho finally made a return to action after five football-less weeks. The festive season had for once proved to be somewhat of an inconvenience, both on and off the field, even work had been cancelled on three occasions due to a waterlogged car park.

The home side started with the same team who defeated Canberra all those Saturdays ago, with new signing Neil Robinson taking up the third spot on the bench with Mark Davis and Dominic Fit Enough To Play Midweek Lester. Continue reading Senior 1sts: Langho 4 – 0 Borrowdale United

Super Zumar!

After a busy weekend for the Samaritans only a week ago, Langho faced table toppers Canberra in a make or break, do or die, eat or be eaten game. As the home sides pitch was deemed unfit midweek, arrangements were made for the fixture to be switched to Salmsbury on what has always been, in my personal opinion, the best surface in the League, by an absolute mile. Game on, for sure.

There was the usual Langho antics in the dressing room before the gaffers arrived – basically hoofing a football against any vertical surface you can find until somebody gets hurt, angry, or both. Continue reading Senior 1sts: Langho 1 – 0 Canberra
